There are some great historian bloggers out there on the internets. If you don't follow them already, you should take a look and see how they blend contemporary issues and history in creative and sometimes provocative ways.
My friend Megan Kate Nelson writes as Historista. She explores a variety of topics related to research, teaching, and academia in general. And boy, can she find the most awesome gifs or what?
Kevin Levin is a high school teacher and writer who holds court over at Civil War Memory. You may actually find some topics for your blog here - lots of stuff about the recent Confederate flag controversy.
An historian of early America at Colorado State, Ann Little writes the aptly titled Historiann blog, where she explores gender and women's history in a broad context.
History News Network (HNN) is an all-purpose repository for historians writing on contemporary issues. You'll find lots of interesting stuff here from all areas of history.
A group of early Americanists run The Junto, where you will find short essays exploring primarily the 17th and 18th centuries. Some interesting material culture stuff here, including this essay on Francis Parkman's medicine chest. Also a review of "Hamilton: The Musical" -- did you ever think of public history as musical theater?
There are many, many others who can provide you with a model for your own blog posts.
